João Figueiredo, Mixed media on MDF "King of Arts" Portrait of King Dom Carlos I of Portugal, after the portrait by José Malhoa in Ajuda National Palace. 130 x 70 cm (51 x 27 1/2 in.) Sold for USD6,000.

Following the interest expressed in comments regarding yesterday's post of João Figueiredo's portraits, I am showing the other two that were for sale in the Camara auction in Lisbon recently.

Figueiredo's biography reveals that he studied History of Art and took a course on film animation at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, and a design course at IADE, Lisbon and graduated in 1993.

His work certainly has an interesting quality to it, combining as it does classical portraiture, surrealism and graphic design. Despite my attraction to the first two, my fear is that his work may be formulaic, and tending to "Pop" art. At present he seems to be very collectible.
