On a Savonarola

Having discussed dressing tables recently, I noticed in the catalogue of an upcoming auction the number of pieces of furniture made with an "X" in some part of its construction. The Savonarola above varies from the original of the design, which usually follows this form:

whereby the chair can fold. One assumes from the name that it is exclusively Italian, but it was also made in other European countries. Anyway, I had to start this post with the chair, so that it would fit in with my "on a roll" theme.

A butler's tray on stand, in George III style

A Louis Philippe mahogany folding games table

A pair of mahogany oval occasional tables in George III style

A walnut folding writing desk, late 19th century

A white painted and parcel gilt X framed stool in Empire style

An oak draw leaf dining table

A Charles X rosewood and satinwood strung work table, circa 1830

The last of these actually has very little X factor in the sense I've been using, except of course the period, (and possibly the wirework). So I may have been on a roll, but perhaps I've overplayed it.
