Last night's sunset from the balcony conicided with my reading the report of the record sale price achieved at auction of Turner's Modern Rome – Campo Vaccino (1839), sold for GBP29,721,150 by Sotheby's.
I have recently been following a picture to be sold at auction described as "after J M W Turner", and this is a copy of the previously highest priced work by the artist, Giudecca, La Donna Della Salute and San Giorgio, (below), bought by Stephen Wynn of Las Vagas for USD35.8m in 2006, as detailed in the New York Times article here. and isn't going to achieve anything more than three figures. The coincidence of my seeing the sunset, and seeing once again Turner's brilliance at capturing this heady time of day, was a visually rewarding experience, and reminds one that life's great joys are there to be seen for free. Just remember to look.
