In the hills around the city of Hue there are the monumental tombs of the former emperors of Vietnam. The most enchanting was the tomb of Tu Duc, the size of a small village with tombs for the emperor and his wives, within a sprawling lush, but unkempt pine forest, all in a delightful state of dilapidation. There did not appear to be many visitors, so the peace and tranquilly that is so elusive in more famous historical sites in the world does not factor. Rather, you can sit in stone archways with wooden doors, and embrace the mystical beauty of the Indochina landscape, this experience enhanced by the wafting smell of burning incense.
