Rob Lowe's Cut-Throat 'Outsiders' Memoir

By DAVID WEINER

March 29, 2011

Rob Lowe strips down shirtless in the new Vanity Fair, on stands April 5, and he talks about the cut-throat audition that changed his life ? for Francis Ford Coppola's 'The Outsiders' ? in an excerpt from his forthcoming memoir.

Ready to call it quits in Hollywood before he even got started, a 17-year-old Lowe decided to try one more audition ? for one of the most competitive roles in town. He eventually landed the part alongside a group of hungry, up-and-coming actors ? some who had already made their way, others who were no-names: Tom Cruise, Patrick Swayze, Matt Dillon, Diane Lane, C. Thomas Howell, Emilio Estevez and Ralph Macchio.

In his soon-to-be-released book Stories I Only Tell My Friends: An Autobiography, the 47-year-old Lowe talks about hanging with the likes of Charlie Sheen and Emilio and the cut-throat atmosphere at the 'Outsider' tryouts, saying of his friends, "We are competitors, and it will likely come down to one of us versus the other. And if it does, we will try to blow each other out of the water with zero regrets on all sides. But until then, it's down to the Sheen's Gilligan's Island pool to celebrate."

Lowe reveals that some of the names that didn't make the 'Outsiders' cut included Dennis Quaid, Mickey Rourke and Scott Baio. He adds that newcomer Cruise was "open, friendly, funny, and has an almost robotic, bloodless focus and an intensity I've never encountered before."
