Two British soldiers killed in firefight with the Taliban in Afghanistan

Two British soldiers have been killed in a gun battle in Afghanistan, the Ministry of Defence said today.

The men, from 1st Battalion The Mercian Regiment, attached to The Royal Gurkha Rifles Battle Group, died in small arms fire in a battle with Taliban soldiers in Nahr-e Saraj, Helmand, yesterday afternoon.

Their families have been told.

Task Force Helmand spokesman Lieutenant Colonel James Carr-Smith, said: 'It is with deep sorrow I must inform you that two soldiers from 1st Battalion The Mercian Regiment, part of 1st Battalion The Royal Gurkha Rifles Battle Group, were killed by small arms fire yesterday afternoon in Nahr-e Saraj, Helmand.

'They will be sorely missed and we will remember them.'

The number of British troops who have died since the mission in Afghanistan began in 2001 now stands at 292.
