Red between the lines

This burnt orange-red is one of my favourite colours and so these two lots up for auction were bookmarked in the usual fashion, on my fantasy wish list.

The top pair of Venetian parcel-gilt polychrome wall mirrors each surmounted by a cartouche within a foliate surround over a rectangular plate within a molded leaf-tipped frame decorated with painted floral sprays. (65"H x 30"W, Circa - late C19th), sold for USD7,500 well above the top estimate of USD3,000.

The pair of Chinoiserie decorated wood obelisks, having a red ground decorated with landscape scenes and gilt accents. (31.75"H, Circa - C20th), sold for a more manageable USD350.
