As part of my passion and interest in fine art, I am following an excellent programme on the great artists, including the work of the American Mary Cassatt, the daughter of a wealthy banker in Pennsylvania. Her family's wealth enabled her to travel to Europe to study art, where her work was strongly influenced by the greats of Impressionism, including Degas and Pissarro, who became both colleagues and mentors.
Her perseverance in a largely male-dominated vocation, and in a foreign land, was ultimately rewarded with due recognition, and I think these two examples show why. The first is a self portrait c1878, and the second, The Boating Party dates from 1893-94.
