From my house, to your palace

Queen Victoria is said to have remarked to the Duchess of Sutherland: "I have come from my house to your palace", in reference to the magnificence of Stafford House (above) when she visited, (from her equally grand abode, Buckingham Palace).

As with most British aristocratic families, The Leveson-Gowers had a number of residences scattered throughout the kingdom, which grew in number as the successful marriages bore material fruit. And Stafford House was the grandest townhouse in London, (designed by Nash). Today it has been renamed Lancaster House and is used by the government for receptions and conferences, including the negotiations that led to the independence given to some African colonies.
